There’s an ongoing debate on each website project. How many main navigation items should we have?

There’s a balance between being “informative” and “off-putting” or making your website look like a bulletin board that anyone can riddle with content.

The main nav is the most sought-after place to be for many content marketers, but the data shows you have to have the right amount of items in your nav for your website to be effective.

In our 2018 Data Download (and the video below), we found the average number of main navigation items that websites had in 2017.
